Mayo Mental Health Association is celebrating World Mental Health Week which takes place from the 10th to the 17th October this year. A programme of events has been arranged including choral singing sessions at Mayo General Hospital, Castlebar, Sacred Heart Hospital, Castlebar, SuperValu foyer, Castlebar. There will also be performances by choirs in Westport and Ballyhaunis. The Association will have information leaflets available to members of the public during the week and volunteers will be present to offer information. In addition Leaving Cert students from Davitt College, Castlebar, will participate in a question and answer session in the Association’s Information Centre at 2 New Antrim St., Castlebar, with guest speakers present including the Mental Health Ireland Development Officer. The Association has recently launched, as one of its projects, the Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) which will be presented to a group of invited guests during the week. It is also intended to have many prominent organisations in the town visit the Centre for a series of talks by visiting speakers. The theme for this year’s Mental Health Week is “Building Resilience” which is very relevant in the current economic climate as it encourages people to develop strengths and abilities to bounce back from the challenges and setbacks that life presents us especially during recessionary times. It involves being able to adapt to changes and to approach negative events as constructively as possible, to build strong relationships and to recognise and ask for help when problems get too much.
